UK 5G & Mobile Coverage

Who has the best signal in 2026?

4G coverage: all networks are broadly equal

All four UK MNOs (EE, O2, Three, Vodafone) claim approximately 99% population 4G coverage outdoors. For everyday 4G usage, network choice makes little practical difference in urban and suburban areas. Differences emerge in rural areas, indoors, and at building penetration depth.

5G coverage: significant differences

Network5G Population Coverage5G Towns/Cities5G StandardSpeed (avg download)
EE87%+500+5G+ Standalone (SA)53.2Mbps (Opensignal Jan 2026)
O2~70%450+5G Standalone32.8Mbps (Opensignal Jan 2026)
Three~62%450+5G (most spectrum)51Mbps combined / 187Mbps 5G (Opensignal Jan 2026)
VodafoneGrowingMajor cities5G (integrating with Three)37.5Mbps (Opensignal Jan 2026)

What these numbers mean

EE has the widest 5G geographic coverage and fastest average speeds across both 4G and 5G combined. Best choice if consistent, reliable speed everywhere matters most.

Three holds 140MHz of 5G spectrum โ€” more than any other operator โ€” and achieves the fastest peak 5G speeds (187Mbps median 5G download per Opensignal January 2026). However, 5G geographic coverage is currently smaller than EE or O2.

O2 has strong, fast-expanding 5G Standalone coverage. The CTIL network-sharing arrangement with Vodafone provides additional rural infrastructure. O2 won Uswitch Best Coverage 2025โ€“2026.

VodafoneThree (combined) has pledged to bring the fastest 5G to 50 million people (71% of population) within one year of the May 2025 merger โ€” watch for improving Vodafone and Three coverage through 2026.

MVNOs use host network coverage

Every MVNO uses its host network's infrastructure: Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and giffgaff use O2's coverage; iD Mobile uses Three's; VOXI, Lebara and Asda use Vodafone's; BT Mobile uses EE's. Check coverage using the host network's checker for the most accurate result.

How to check coverage at your postcode

  • EE: coverage.three.co.uk or the EE website
  • O2: o2.co.uk/coveragechecker
  • Three: Three.co.uk โ€” online coverage map
  • Vodafone: vodafone.co.uk/network/coverage-checker
  • Ofcom's checker: checker.ofcom.org.uk โ€” shows predicted outdoor 4G coverage from all four networks at once

Indoor coverage

All networks support Wi-Fi Calling on compatible devices โ€” this routes calls over your home Wi-Fi when mobile signal is weak indoors. Enable in your phone's settings. EE's 5G+ Standalone network also provides better building penetration than standard 5G.

Rural coverage

EE has the best rural 4G/5G coverage thanks to BT's existing infrastructure. O2 extends rural reach via the CTIL arrangement with Vodafone. The Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme aims to extend 4G to 95% of UK landmass โ€” all four MNOs are participating. Check the Ofcom coverage checker for accurate rural postcode results.
