With approximately 23.2 million mobile subscribers, O2 is the UK's second-largest mobile network. O2 traces its roots to 1985 when British Telecom and Securicor launched Cellnet, and it became O2 in 2001 when BT demerged its mobile operations. O2 launched the iPhone exclusively in the UK in 2007 and has been known for its Priority rewards programme ever since. A key 2025-26 development: O2 is now the only major UK network still including free EU roaming on all standard plans.

O2 SIM Only plans are available on 30-day rolling, 12-month, and 24-month contracts. All plans include unlimited minutes and texts. Data tiers range from small allowances right up to unlimited. A key feature unique to O2: Data Rollover — any unused data carries over to the next month. Higher-tier plans (O2 Plus, O2 Ultimate) add extra roaming destinations and the Volt bundle for customers who also have Virgin Media broadband. O2 applies a fixed £2.50/month annual rise each April.
O2 Pay Monthly uses the O2 Refresh model — your bill is split into two separate agreements: a Device Plan (interest-free loan for the handset, 24 or 36 months) and an Airtime Plan (your data/minutes/texts). You can pay off the device early and drop to a cheaper SIM-only airtime plan, or upgrade by settling the remaining device balance. This is more flexible than most competitors. O2 Switch Up lets eligible customers upgrade before their device plan ends.
O2 PAYG is available with Big Bundle add-ons for 30 days. Standard PAYG rates apply when you're not on a bundle. O2 also has a social-tariff 'Essential Plan' with reduced pricing for customers on eligible benefits — this is exempt from the annual price rise.
O2 supports eSIM on compatible devices including recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S20+, and Google Pixel 3+. Activate via the My O2 app or by scanning a QR code sent by email. O2 Refresh plans support eSIM. O2 was the first UK network to launch satellite-to-mobile coverage (Starlink partnership), available as a bolt-on in 2026.
O2 provides 4G coverage to approximately 99% of the UK population outdoors. 5G is available in approximately 450+ towns and cities, covering around 70%+ of the population. O2's 5G Standalone network launched in 500+ towns. O2 participates in the CTIL network-sharing arrangement with Vodafone for rural infrastructure. O2 won the Uswitch Best Mobile Network Coverage award in 2025 and 2026.
O2 is the only major UK network still including free EU roaming on all standard plans (not just premium tiers). You can use up to 25GB of your UK data allowance across 48 EU and EEA destinations at no extra cost. Beyond the EU, O2 Travel destinations add 27 more countries free on eligible plans. O2 Travel bolt-ons are available for other worldwide destinations. O2 also offers Satellite coverage in some rural areas.
